For over four years, a caregiver from Always There In-Home Care has visited Allen Lee every single day to help him with daily tasks. Allen has Cerebral Palsy and relies on his caregivers to help him bathe, dress, clean his apartment, and run errands – basically to help with every aspect of his life. Without this help, Allen would surely have to live in a nursing home. But, through the Medicaid Waiver program and Always There, Allen can live in an independent apartment. Naturally, he has grown fond of his caregiver, Nancy, and of the staff at the office as well. Someone from the office speaks to Allen by telephone every day – often twice a day! Though Allen has no real family, the staff at Always There have become his substitute family.
Allen Lee’s 54th birthday is on June 23rd, and the folks at Always There have a surprise in store for him. The day before his birthday, Allen is scheduled to ride his motorized wheelchair to the bus stop on Highland Avenue, board the accessible bus, and go see the Always There gang at their office on Lorna Road. Allen has never been to the office and he’s looking forward to this visit so much that he is literally counting the days. “You know what?” Allen asks on the phone. “Three weeks from today!” Allen says - his grin palpable across the phone lines. Allen simply can’t wait for his visit to the office. He has never had a birthday party before.
What Allen doesn’t know is that the gang has a few surprises waiting for him. In addition to a birthday party - complete with barbecue, birthday cake, birthday presents and balloons – there will be a visit by Hoover Mayor Tony Petelos, and Allen will receive a very special “certificate of recognition” from Alabama Governor Bob Riley. The smiles are guaranteed to be huge, the tears may flow, and fun will be had by all.
On Wednesday, June 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Allen Lee will be celebrating his birthday with some mighty special people – the staff at Always There In-Home Care, special guests included. Their office is located at 625 Lorna Square, in Hoover. Just look for the balloons.
